Online posts suggested there had been a government cover-up. Some claimed nearby airports had been shut down. Others insisted power had been deliberately cut. More imaginative versions alleged that portals had opened and extraterrestrial beings had entered the shopping complex. Thousands of people shared the theories, while millions watched the videos trying to decide what they believed. 

What made the conspiracy so compelling was not the evidence itself, but the mystery surrounding the event. The police response was undeniably large. The videos were blurry enough to leave room for interpretation. The witnesses quoted online often remained anonymous. In the absence of clear answers, imagination rushed in to fill the gaps.
